Representation Matters...
This statement is true in so many facets of life. From the age of 12, I knew I wanted to become a physician. However, growing up as a little black girl from Gary, Indiana, I did not see physicians that looked like myself. As I persevered and my dream became a reality, I promised myself that I would accept any opportunity to tell my story and how it is possible to achieve one's goals. Through my journey I have come to appreciate that this representation extends beyond my phenotypical characteristics. The concept of "Representation Matters" extends to being a pathologist and a laboratorian. The act of getting from behind the microscope and working with fellow clinicians further dispels the perception that the laboratory is simply a "black box" where specimens go in and results come out. Due to this, ideas and efforts can be effectively communicated resulting in optimized patient care.
